From Caland Clippings, April 30, 1980  The Closure of Caland

Disposition of Lands / Bill Mazurkewich

As part of our termination plan, Caland will be disposing the lands it controlled during its mining operations. These comprised mainly of three blocks of lands. The first block comprises those mining claims leased from Steep Rock Iron Mines and will be returned to them as of the end of this year. The second block is comprised of Caland owned mining claims adjacent to the leased claims and these have been sold to Ontario Hydro in connection with their new Hydro Generating Station. The third block is comprised of Caland owned mining claims in the Margaret Lake area which will have been turned over to the Township free of charge for their use. In addition, Caland has control, via Licenses of Occupation, use of certain Crown Lands for water control purposes. The licenses will be transferred to Ontario Hydro, the Township or be returned to the Crown.

Asset Disposal / Garry Pangracs

Caland will be shipping the steam boilers and large Bellis-Morcan compressors to Minorca. These are the two main dismantling jobs remaining after April 30th. Shaft capping and the bulk heading of adits is in progress and near completion.

Many of you are probably wondering what is going to happen to equipment, buildings, etc. when Caland closes. Well, we have entered into an agreement with Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers to handle the disposal of all remaining assets that have not been transferred to Inland operations in the U.S.

Ritchie Bros. will auction all equipment on May 29th tentatively. The auction will follow the same format as the one held at SRIM last September. Ritchie Bros. will have crews working at cleaning and painting equipment. It is also Ritchie Bros. intention to make certain repairs to the various pieces of equipment in order to improve salability. Ritchie Bros. hopes to hire local people to help with various aspects of the sale preparations.
